Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy has provided more information about the reasoning behind the government’s move to restrict non-essential gatherings of more than 500 people, as early evidence of community transmission of the coronavirus emerges.

Australia has now recorded 200 coronavirus cases after three more were confirmed in South Australia.
