Australia has reported the highest daily death toll from coronavirus today as Melbourne experiences a second wave of COVID-19 infections.
Victoria state, where Melbourne is located, saw 19 deaths on Monday, bringing Australia’s total deaths to 314 with around 21,400 cases. Over 70% of Australia’s cases have been in Melbourne and two thirds of its deaths. The country saw early successes in being able to control the spread of the virus, and has still experienced far fewer deaths than many developed nations. However a second wave of infections spiralled in Melbourne in July, with a lockdown being imposed last month. As cases continue to increase, a stricter lockdown was imposed on 3rd August. This includes a night time curfew, all non-essential businesses being shut, imposing fines on those not wearing face masks in public places and workers having to carry permits when they leave their house.
