B.C.'s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, along with health minister Adrian Dix delivered an update on the province's COVID-19 situation on Thursday.
Health officials reported 165 new cases of the disease in yet another single-day record. The previous record of 139 was set a week earlier. The uptick put the province at 1,705 active cases — also a new record.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also reported one new death, bringing B.C.’s total to 210.
A further 2,949 people were reported to be in isolation due to potential exposure.
The briefing came as the B.C. government on Thursday unveiled its wide-ranging economic recovery plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with support for job retraining, a tax break for businesses, and funding for a new tourism task force.
The province said about 200,000 jobs will be protected in a plan that’s largely being seen as a potential election platform if Premier John Horgan decides to send voters to the polls this fall.
About $300 million will go toward small- and medium-sized business recovery grants, touted to help approximately 15,000 hard-hit businesses.
