Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw gave an update on the most recent cases of COVID-19 in the province on Wednesday and discussed the government's ongoing response to the pandemic.
As of May 6, Hinshaw reported 70 new cases of the novel coronavirus in the province, bringing Alberta's total to 5,963. Of these cases, 3,552 people have recovered from COVID-19.
Six new deaths were also reported, bringing Alberta's COVID-19 death toll to 112.
The doctor also addressed the outbreaks in the province's meat processing plants.
A moment of silence to honour a worker who died of COVID-19 was held at a southern Alberta meat-packer on Wednesday, as news broke that the father of another plant employee had also died of the illness.
A Cargill employee’s father, who was visiting from the Philippines, died after contracting the novel coronavirus and being admitted to hospital, said the union that represents workers at the slaughterhouse near High River.
