Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided a provincial update on the response to the COVID-19 outbreak on Monday.
Hinshaw said the province would be expanding its eligibility standards for COVID-19 testing to any Albertan who has symptoms, which include fever, cough and shortness of breath. She said “aggressive testing is essential for controlling the spread” of the virus, but warned that this expanded testing would result in an increased number of confirmed daily cases.
However, testing all symptomatic Albertans would also provide a better picture of the spread, Hinshaw said.
Over 77,000 people across Alberta have been tested for COVID-19 since the province’s response began.
Hinshaw also reported two additional deaths and 81 new confirmed cases, bringing the provincial total of COVID-19 cases to 1,732.
