Alberta reported 45 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 1 new death, bringing the death toll in the province to 118.
The province’s chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said during a daily briefing about Alberta’s response to the pandemic that 4,866 people have recovered. There are currently 1,361 active cases.
Hinshaw said 73 cases have resulted in hospitalization and 12 people are in intensive care.
She also addressed questions about the province’s relaunch strategy, and said a decision about whether the province would push forward with Stage 1 of the relaunch on Thursday would be made during a meeting of the emergency management cabinet committee. A decision on that front would be announced on Wednesday.
Hinshaw asked Albertans to “be patient” and said two triggers must be met in order for the province to move forward with the relaunch: first, the hospitalization rate must be stable or must not have increased by more than 5 per cent and second, ICU occupancy must be less than 50 per cent of available beds.
