Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, said on Monday that the data modeling shows the city is currently in its peak period for the COVID-19 outbreak, depending on the current reported cases.
She added that the current data shows a decrease in the number of new daily hospitalizations and that the city hasn’t seen the dramatic surge in hospitalizations as originally expected.
Dr. de Villa said all of this information must be taken with “cautious optimism” as the COVID-19 curve is flattening in the city.
Toronto reported a total of 3,682 cases of COVID-19 in total, including 3,343 confirmed cases and 339 probable cases as of Monday afternoon.
A total of 181 deaths due to COVID-19 was reported in the city as of Monday as well.
Toronto Mayor John Tory started his statement during Monday’s coronavirus briefing by expressing condolences on behalf of Toronto residents to the people of Nova Scotia following the shooting incident that happened in the province over the weekend.
Mayor Tory also said that the Toronto sign has been dimmed and flags have been lowered in remembrance of the victims.
