Canadian health and government officials provided an update on the latest numbers of COVID-19 cases in the country and the federal government's ongoing response to the pandemic.
Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam confirmed on Monday that there are now a total of 24,824 cases of COVID-19 in Canada, as well as 734 deaths, with a "significant proportion" linked to outbreaks in long-term care facilities. She said these deaths will continue to increase even as the epidemic growth rates slow down due to the prolonged course of the novel coronavirus disease.
Tam praised the shifting of behaviour of Canadians to implement social distancing in their everyday lives. She said if we want the best-case scenario, we must continue our best efforts "to plank the curb, and then crush it."
During the press conference, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau announced a $50 million investment for employers in the food supply chain including farmers to enforce strict health measures such as the 14-day quarantine period after travel to help strengthen the safety of workers and Canadians in response to COVID-19.
