Russia President Vladimir Putin said that the country would start gradually easing coronavirus-related lockdown measures but that individual regions would need to tailor their own approach to varying local conditions during the pandemic on Monday.
In a televised address, Putin announced the restoration of basic economic sectors including construction, mining and agriculture, starting Tuesday, May 12, as well as a new welfare plan for families with children.
A new surge in coronavirus cases took Russia's tally past those in Italy and Britain on Monday, making it the third-highest in the world just hours before President Putin's announcement.
The official tally surged to 221,344, meaning Russia now has more registered cases than Italy or Britain and only trails Spain and the United States, as the number of new cases of the novel coronavirus jumped by 11,656 in the past 24 hours.
