World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday.
Director-general Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that he is “deeply concerned” about the “rapid escalation and global spread” of COVID-19, adding that they expect to reach 1 million confirmed cases and 50,000 deaths worldwide within the next few days.
Programme director Dr. Michael Ryan said it is important for all countries to take the pandemic “seriously,” and that they need a “comprehensive strategy” that would help health systems “absorb the blow” caused by the outbreak.
Currently, there are over 800,000 cases worldwide and the disease has killed over 40,000 people, and Dr. David Nabarro, a special envoy to the WHO, said about a third of the world's countries are on lockdown.
