Today marks exactly six months since the coronavirus pandemic was declared a national disaster on the 15th of March.
The announcement was made ten days after the first case was reported in South Africa which was followed by an initial gradual rise in confirmed infections, mostly imported through international travel.
Government declared a national state of disaster and the country went into lockdown Level 5 on the 26th of March.
To date, the cumulative number of confirmed coronavirus cases stands at 650 749 and there have since been 15 499 COVID-19 related deaths.
Despite South Africa being praised by the World Health Organisation for its success in limiting the spread of the coronavirus, lockdown has also seen rampant corruption in the procurement of PPEs, economic contractions; and an ever-increasing unemployment level.
