I wanted to involve my kids in the process of making their own face masks because it’s more likely that they will wear it if they are involved in the process, and I enjoy watching them learn how to do new things.
Disclaimer: While this type of mask folds over offering 3 layers of cloth protection, it is NOT equivalent to a medical mask or N95 mask. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the CDC is now recommending face masks, and even provides tips on their website on how to make sew and no-sew face masks yourself. Here is a link to mask info on the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/how-to-make-cloth-face-covering.html
There are studies that show the various types of masks and their corresponding level of effectiveness. For this mask, all you need is a pair of scissors and a cotton shirt with a cute design that you do not mind up-cycling.
You can use the shirt itself for the strips along the side. I preferred using elastic bands for the side strips; these were a little more comfortable for me. Here is a ink to elastic bands in case you are interested: https://amzn.to/2XZhssF
I hope you enjoy making masks with your kids!
