Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday announced a 10 pm county-wide curfew starting Friday as Florida reported over 10,000 new COVID-19 cases breaking the state’s one-day record.
"Our goal is to avoid stretching hospitals' abilities to have sufficient staffing in the event of too many cases overwhelming our healthcare system," Gimenez said at a press conference.
He added, "We have plenty of capacity of beds and ventilators county-wide at this time, so this is a precautionary measure."
Gimenez also announced that he has signed the order rolling back the openings of the entertainment sector.
The measure comes six weeks after the reopening and right before the Fourth of July weekend as many doctors and health officials fear another spike in coronavirus cases.
This Fourth of July was initially planned as the first major holiday amid the pandemic. However, it has already been marked by cancelled celebrations and closures of movie theatres, casinos, strip clubs, and other entertainment venues.
The state of Florida has confirmed 169,106 COVID-19 cases and 3,617 deaths related to the virus, according to the latest data released by the local health department.
SOT, Nay Antoine, Tourist: "What is the curfew going to do? The curfew is in effect, but everybody is outside right now, what is this curfew going to do? Anything that happens now can happen in an hour, do you know what I'm saying? So why is the curfew in effect?"
SOT, Desirae Dallard, Tourist: "I mean, as long as we're keeping each other safe, as far as keeping each other's distance and keeping the masks on, as far as keeping everybody separate where they is I think it's no point, I think it's no point."
SOT, Carlos Gimenez, Mayor of Miami-Dade County: "Our goal is to avoid stretching hospitals' abilities to have sufficient staffing in the event of too many cases overwhelming our healthcare system. Let me stress that we have plenty of capacity of beds and ventilators county-wide at this time, so this is a precautionary measure."
SOT, Jorge Colina, Miami Chief of Police: "That means is we're going to be enforcing all of the city's restrictions emergencies orders, the county's emergency orders, etc. That means we'll be closing business that do not comply with the orders, that means that we'll be issuing first a written warning and subsequently be issuing fines to people who do not wear mask while in public spaces"
SOT, Ambar Rosas, Local Resident: "I think it's a good idea in general right now because of the current climate with the virus, it's needed to take a break and wait until things cool down and there's more information about the virus."
