The World Health Organization said the number of coronavirus cases in Europe last week was triple the number reported during the first week in March, warning that the increasing numbers of people needing to be hospitalized could further strain the continent's hospitals.
At a news conference on Friday, Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO's technical lead on COVID-19 voiced concern about the rising numbers.
"It isn't just the increase in case numbers that we're seeing," she said. "It's the increase in hospitalization and the increase in the number of individuals who are in ICU. We know of a number of cities across Europe where ICU capacity will be reached in the in the coming weeks."
Van Kerkhove said the expected crush on hospitals was especially alarming with the imminent arrival of the flu season.
She said "we are not in the same position that we were in three months ago, six months ago," noting that advancements in treatment have been made and some countries have significantly increased their testing capacity.
